It's a small, innocuous statue on Kanto's Route 8, the one connecting Saffron City to Lavender Town, of a growlithe sitting in wait, seemingly waiting patiently for its trainer's return, that catches Leaf's attention right away, even as Red is too busy scanning the grass for interesting pokémons to catch.
"Look, the top of its head is all golden," she says, so pleased with her discovery that Red has to tear himself away from his goal to see what it's all about.
He leans in and, wordlessly as always, gives the statue a good pat; if so many people stop to rub it, it has to be good luck for sure.
