The strange man is big, huge in fact, a hunk of a guy with a messy beard and the demeanor of someone who’s not to be messed with, and after a day spent being scolded and spat on by every person he's run into, he can't help but try to make himself smaller, hope that he'll simply be ignored like the low-ranking scum that he is.
Instead, the bearded man spots him and his forehead creases with something that's weirdly reminiscent of concern; before he can slink away, the man asks, "Are you alright, son?"
He can't remember anybody ever asking him that question for as long as he's lived, and he's nobody's son as far as he knows, so it's only natural that such an odd question would stun him into silence.
