It was just Madeline's luck: Kara had disappeared again, right as she was about to leave. At this point, she wasn't sure if it was a talent the stunfisk was born with or a skill she had been perfecting since the day Madeline had caught her.
She'd asked at the Pokémon Center if she should be concerned about Kara constantly hiding herself like this, but the nurse had told her this was normal behavior. It was just a thing they did, some kind of instinct. After all, Madeline had accidentally stepped on her while she was concealed by grass and mud; that was how they'd met. Still, at the time, she didn't think it would apply to her apartment.
"Kara?" she called out. No response. She set her bag down in the hallway and began to search.
First, she checked the obvious spots. Under the fridge. In the laundry basket. Pretending to be a bathmat in front of the shower. On top of the kitchen cabinets, which seemed like the last place a stunfisk would resort to, and yet she'd found Kara there multiple times in the last month. Maybe she just liked being able to look over the room.
Twenty minutes later, Kara was still nowhere to be found, and Madeline was going to be late for work. Defeated, she sunk into her couch to try to brainstorm wherever else a flat pokémon could be.
Her hand landed near the crack between the cushions and brushed... something. She frowned; leaned forward to look.
Lo and behold, nestled in that thin space, only the tip of her tail visible, was Kara.
Madeline sighed, though she couldn't help but smile a little. "What am I going to do with you?"
At least her coworkers would get a kick out of it.
