The limits of Lysandre's patience were contingent on a variety of factors that Augustine could, in most circumstances, deduce with surprising accuracy. A long day, especially one involving having to deal with his guilt and perceived inadequacy, and the wrong setting, such as the closest bar to the lab on a busy, crowded evening, usually brought him to the edge fairly quickly.

Tonight, the straw that broke the camerupt's back was the third time the barman announced that someone had bought a cocktail for Augustine. This wasn't an unusual occurrence, though they tended to avoid the bar when it was this full. Augustine had tried a sip of the first two cocktails and then politely declined them, to which Lysandre had proceeded to drink them down in two gulps.

That clearly had not deterred any of his suitors, and so when the barman – who, while managing to school his expression into something somewhat neutral, seemed to be stuck between "entertained" and "afraid" – put down the third cocktail between them, gesturing vaguely at someone in the crowd, Lysandre leaned all of his weight on the counter, straightened his back, and spun around on his barstool, grumbling.

"You're the one who wanted to come here," Augustine pointed out. He pinched the straw between his fingers and took a sip. "Is there even alcohol in this?"

"It's rosé," the barman said.

Lysandre scoffed.

"It's a good thing they're ordering those for you and not for me."

Augustine rolled his eyes. He took another sip. This really wasn't anything to write home about, but now he was determined to drink it all out of sheer spite.

"This attitude is exactly why nobody ever buys you drinks," Augustine said in-between long sips. "The last time someone tried, may I remind you, you refused to even drink it."

"That was years ago." Lysandre watched the cocktail disappear through the straw, flowing between his lips. "At least now they have the excuse of abhorring me, I suppose."

"Abhorring," Augustine echoed with a snort. It was a good thing he hadn't been drinking when he'd said it. "Do you hear yourself?"

Lysandre grumbled something unintelligible.

"The issue is that you're hot and menacing," Augustine went on. He purposely made as much noise as possible when slurping the last few drops left in the glass. Lysandre's face was tilted away from him, his back still pressed against the bar, but, even in the dim light, he could see the beginning of a flush spreading on his cheeks. "I'm hot and approachable."

The barman muffled a laugh in his fist, half-heartedly disguising it into a cough. Lysandre sighed. He was still turned away from him, glaring at the rest of the room – which would win him no favor with potential suitors, surely.

"If you're going to sulk, I'm going to the bathroom," Augustine said, pushing his glass toward the barman. He smiled at him and mouthed something. The barman nodded.

When Augustine came back to the bar, Lysandre was once again facing the counter, resting his elbows on the well-worn wood. He didn't even flinch when a glass was put down next to him.

"Special order for you," the barman said. Lysandre blinked at him, and then down at the glass.

"You didn't have to do this to lift my spirits," Lysandre mumbled. He stirred the drink with the straw.

Augustine grinned at him. "I don't know what you're talking about. I just got back from the bathroom."

"This has way too much sugar," Lysandre went on after taking a sip. He was smiling, the kind of smile that made his whole face softer, his shoulders visibly relaxed. "Whoever picked this for me has terrible taste."

"Really? Let me see," Augustine said, and then, as soon as Lysandre turned toward him to push the glass in his direction, he took him by the back of his neck and pulled him into a kiss.

"Huh," was all Lysandre had to say when they broke apart, his eyes dark and hazy.

He closed his mouth when Augustine licked his lips, slowly, dragging the tip alongside his upper lip.

"You're right, that is very sweet." Lysandre huffed out a short breath. "Wait, I think I need to sample it a little bit more–"

Lysandre's laugh at that was muffled under his mouth. The barman stepped away, taking the half-full cocktail with him.
