You were a girl in that you being a girl made your father happy, in that you being a girl made sense because you had long hair and pretty eyes, and you liked flowers and animals, and you were quiet and obedient, and you wanted your father to be happy, and you wanted your mother to be left alone.
It was a lie, but it was one you could believe in, in time, so long as you could spend some time alone on your computer or in basements playing with boys or in the garden pretending that you could sprout daisies off the top of your head.
In some ways, perhaps it was a blessing, to have been forced to become fertile soil for flowers you didn't like as much as your father wanted you to, if only because you could now use them as compost to grow into the man you'd been all along, away from him and everything else he and the rest of your family needed you to be.
