"I thought I'd proven myself worthy," Eusine admits, his face drawn in defeat, sitting at Morty's table with his knees under him as he waits for his friend to finish brewing them tea, "and I suppose I was wrong, once again."
He doesn't look up from where he's staring at his gloved hands even upon hearing the sound of cups being set down in front of him, though his mouth at least curves up slightly when Morty lays his palm on his shoulder.
"You've done plenty enough," the gym leader says, as calm and gentle as he always is – and Eusine finds that the confidence in his voice helps, as it always does.
