There's something about Augustine Sycamore that seeps under Lysandre's skin like a deep burn. At first, he puts it on account of his brilliant mind, his patient gaze, his pride in his work, and the ways their worldviews intersect in fascinating twists and turns. It's not desire, he thinks, watching the professor oversee the care of pokémons that have been brought to his laboratory. It's common interests, common goals. That he's never been drawn to someone else like this before is par for the course: he had yet to meet someone so perfectly attuned to him.

The desire comes later. Eyes that linger on the curve of an uncovered neck. Anger that lights up in the pit of his stomach upon seeing a stranger catch the professor's attention. Sweat that breaks on his brow as the professor crosses one leg over the other and he gets a peek of an ankle clad in red fabric.

To want so ardently is beneath him, yet there are so many things that he wants. He wants to keep the professor close, to bring him even closer. He wants the professor to listen to him, to look back when he stares, to share the things that plague his mind the same way Lysandre wants to share his. He wants to take, the worst sin of all, to trap Augustine Sycamore within his grasp and never let him go, and he wants, with a desperation that disgusts him, to be wanted back.

He channels it into other things, more productive endeavors, projects that he can't tell the professor about. He tells himself it is not cowardice, but pragmatism, that he is not afraid of losing the professor, merely of putting unnecessary obstacles in his way. It's not lying if only part of the truth can be seen, and this goes for both of them. Yet, far too many times, when he's alone in the safety of his home, nursing a glass of wine and taking in the beauty of the early morning sky through the window of his living room, his mind still wanders back to the professor, to the possibility of bringing him closer, of leading him astray from the path he's chosen.

Acting on those feelings would bring nothing good to either of them; quite the contrary. He tells himself that, in a last desperate attempt to rationalize himself out of this shameful weakness, gain some measure of comfort that, by forbidding himself from giving in, he's doing a good deed, he's contributing to ensuring that he can make the world a better place.

It does very little.
