Summary: "There's a ghost in the attic," Aya whispers.
Notes: Written for
pokepodproject! Looking for inspiration, I spotted this dex entry for Gastly: "When exposed to a strong wind, a Gastly's gaseous body quickly dwindles away. They cluster under the eaves of houses to escape the ravages of wind." and was immediately struck by the idea of a gastly seeking shelter inside a house and then getting stuck.

It's Sunday, and there's nobody home except Youko and her little sister, because their parents had to leave in a rush for a family emergency and Youko is finally old enough to stay home and look after her sister. There's no reason to wake up early, so she's determined to make the most of it, rolling over in her bed when she's taken out of her sleep by her brain's internal clock, determined to return to her dreams.
She's just closed her eyes when she's startled fully awake by the loud thud of Aya rushing to open her bedroom door.
"Youko!" Aya yells at the top of her lungs. Youko groans. "Youko, wake up! Wake up!"
Every second that passes, Youko curses the day her parents brought her sister back home from the hospital. "What is it?" she grumbles.
Aya climbs on the bed. Her face is pale, and her eyes are very round. With her hair tied in braids and her pink nightgown, she looks so small and frightened, and Youko feels a little bad for being so grumpy. She moves aside so Aya can slip under the covers with her.
"There's a ghost in the attic," Aya whispers.
It's such a silly thing to say that Youko can't hold back a snicker, thinking her sister is playing a practical joke on her. Yet when she looks at her, at the fearful expression on her face, she knows it's serious.
Very slowly, in a series of hushed whispers that makes it so that Youko has to keep asking her to speak louder, Aya explains that she got into the attic because she'd heard Mom talking about keeping something secret in there. Youko's big sister instincts take over, and she makes her promise not to do it again. After swearing on Megumi, the family arcanine, that she won't, Aya goes on to recount her spooky tale: she climbed up the ladder, moved some dusty boxes around, and then heard a strange, high-pitched noise above her. In the end, all she saw of the ghost is a vague shadow and what she describes as "too bright white eyes", but she's adamant about what it was.
"A ghost!" she repeats, with emphasis. Youko wraps her arm around her.
She gets her to calm down, eventually. Maybe it was a piece of cloth, or maybe it was one of those lamps that automatically turn on. Maybe it was nothing but her overactive imagination. They go down to have breakfast and play with Megumi, their appointed guardian, and soon enough it's as if nothing has ever happened.
Youko thinks about it, though.
It's only once Aya has gone to sleep in the evening that she acts on it. She tucks her sister in, waits a little to make sure she's not going to wake up, and then gestures for Megumi to follow, so they can make their way up toward the attic together.
The attic isn't really a place she's used to visiting. It's full of dust and cobwebs, and she's convinced she's heard weird noises there at night. She's still pretty sure there's no ghost, but she's still glad for Megumi's huge, reassuring presence. They rummage around a bit, the arcanine sniffing around and under some of the packed boxes and assortments of forgotten items, until Youko feels stupid for even entertaining her sister's paranoia.
That's when she spots it: a dark shadow under the rafters. It sees her, too, lets out a screech that makes Megumi's head snap up and her mouth curl into a snarl. She barks, once, twice, her body temperature spiking up so much that Youko can feel it from where she's standing. The thing in the attic screeches again, its body undulating like it's being blown on by the wind. It turns, slightly, and Youko spots its huge, round eyes.
"It's a pokémon!" she mutters under her breath. She doesn't recognize it, but there's no other thing it can be. It doesn't mean it's not dangerous. It does mean it's not a ghost.
Her relief is cut short when the wild pokémon suddenly darts down toward her, a mass of billowing smoke gliding through the air at full speed. Megumi tries to shield her, letting out another series of loud barks in warning, but the pokémon simply flies past them, rushing to seek out an exit, and disappears down the ladder.
Megumi and Youko are as quick as they can be behind it. They hurry to the kitchen, where they find Aya, wide awake and staring at a half-open window Youko forgot to shut, their "attacker" nowhere to be seen.
"You chased away the ghost!" Aya shouts excitedly.
Knowing her, there's no way she's falling back asleep for at least two hours.
Once she senses no more danger, Megumi calms down instantly, her expression once more peaceful, her tail twitching slightly. She sits between the two girls and joins Aya in staring at the window, just in case.
Youko takes a deep breath that she releases in one long sigh.
"We're not telling Mom and Dad about this," she says.
She's certain it'll be the first thing coming out of her sister's mouth as soon as they're home.
